About Harley D/Referral

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Species: Dog

  • Current Age: 15 Years 7 Months (best estimate)

Harley D. is a neutered male that was turned into the vet clinic in a
small town south of here.  They estimated him to be 2 yrs old. That was
two years ago so he would be 4 yrs old now.  He is UTD on shots and
HomeAgain Mircochipped. He was found in an abandoned farmstead near
Enderlin, ND. He was taken in by the vet there and held while looking for
his original home / a new home in their kennel getting general care and
exercise (fetch being is preferred game) as staff time allowed.  We had
previously been helping find him a forever home via petfinder/ adopt-a-pet
with a facilitated listing. With him being kenneled the vet contacted us
about finding him a foster home. With a family that could give him time
and attention and let him be a dog. We had one so we jumped on it! He was
UTD on vaccinations at the clinic and we have kept them current in our
care.

While in his foster home he has had opportunities to meet other dogs,
cats, & teen kids. He was around one of our Board member's son under 2 yrs
old also at a comfortable distance and didn't lunge or react poorly with
him. With all new things it seems he has some sort of stranger anxiety at
varying levels but with consistency he has come a LONG way - especially
with cats. He doesn't prefer the company of strange men but he has been
making wonderful progress within his foster home on that issue.

Because he loves fetch, is strong, and has a lot of energy we thought he
might be a good search/rescue dog. We contacted a trainer that specializes
in rehabilitating strays for work to see if he would be a good fit.
Unfortunately he was too nervous around the trainer and displayed some
posturing that wouldn't be acceptable in that line of work. The trainer
said that he would benefit from some obedience training to gain
confidence. The foster home was on hand for the evaluation and was able to
ask a lot of questions. He was later enrolled in an obedience course and
was able to get some 1 on 1 training on the foster home's property. The
foster home was very please with Harley D. progress. They know he is a
good dog that got handed a raw deal. He is goofy, happy, and lovable. He
is smart he has learned a lot in the past 2 yrs about love and trust.  The
foster family has done a wonderful job but they wish for someone with the
tools and know how to "finish" him to make him adoptable.
